Share Our Strengths 4th Annual Great American Baking Contest

Flavor’s magazine encourages you to come join an event for a great cause on Wednesday March 2.  Share Our Strength (S.O.S.) will be hosting its fourth Annual Great American Baking Contest.  Whether you are a professional, amateur or young chef, you are welcome to come and show case your talent in this wonderful event that benefits the fight towards childhood hunger.    There will be prizes given to the top three finishers in three categories including $500 for first place in the professional category and $25 for first place in the amateur and children’s categories. This grand event will take place at Atlanta’s Le Cordon Blue College of Culinary Arts.  Guests will enjoy a sample of each dessert, complimentary wines, cake and a silent auction.  Judges include local celebrities such as Executive Chef Todd Kazenske from Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts Atlanta; Cooks Warehouse Owner Mary Moore; Pastry Chef Jennifer Etchison of Pricci; Pastry Chef Heather Hurlbert of the Cherokee Town and Country Club as well as contestant on Top Chef: Just Desserts; Jenny Turknett, a dining team member for The Atlanta Journal – Constitution.  VIP’s can attend a special reception with Q100’s Jenn Hobby at 6:30 and regular admission begins at 7:30.  Regular admission tickets are $25 and VIP admission is $35.  You will not want to miss this delicious event.  For more information, please visit


The 40th Annual Cathedral Antiques Show and Tour of Homes

The Cathedral Antiques Show and Tour of homes graces Atlanta for its 40th Annual Show.  The Tour of Homes will run January 30th and 31st.  This Tour will feature four exquisite Buckhead homes as well as the “Inspiration House”.  There will be several fine interior designers at the “Inspiration House” who will dazzle you with their knowledge and inspiring designs.  The Antiques Show kicks off with a Gala Preview Party on Wednesday, February 2, 6:30-9:00 p.m. There will be fine wines provided from Chateau Ste Michelle Vineyards and the delicious food will be catered by Dilts and Associates as well as a special performance by Francine Reed.  A donation of $150 Ticket includes a “Run of the Show” Admission.  The Antiques Show runs from Wednesday, February 2nd-Saturday, February 5th. This Show will showcase some of the most elegant and oldest antique collections of the 18th and 19th Centuries. Items include furniture, paintings, silver, jewelry and much, much more. An Event Fit for a King

Beautiful gowns and bow ties will be the fashion as The Shepherd Center will be hosting it’s 11th Annual Legendary Party, Saturday, November 6 from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. Guests will celebrate the beauty and elegance of the legendary French Palace Versailles and famed gardens as the theme is Legend of the Sun King, Reflections of Versailles. Regal blues and gold’s will top the tables adorned with a bounty of flowers. Simply Irresistible will entertain guests into the wee hours of the morning as Karaoke kicks off across the hall at midnight. Proceeds from this event will go to support Shepherd Center’s Annual Fund, which benefits programs like Patient and Family Housing and the Center’s MS Center General Support Fund, providing medicine and care for MS patients without insurance. Come See What’s Rising in the Kitchen!

The Atlanta Community Food Bank‘s Simple Abundance Cooking Class Series will present a cooking class on Demystifying Bread: Ciabatta on Monday, November 8, from 7-9 p.m. This event will be led by Atlanta Chef Rob Alexander of Holeman and Finch Bread Company. He will eliminate the mystery out of making bread as he demonstrates making the perfect Ciabatta. This class will be dedicated to the art of mixing, folding and baking Ciabatta as well as incorporating the dough into other delicious dishes. These dishes include Meatless Monday Sandwich-Tomato Basil Mozzarella “open face”(two variations), Rosemary Grape Foccacia, and La Quercia Procuitto Americano Sandwich with arugula and cultured butter. This event will include wine tastings sponsored by Sherlock’s Wine Merchant and a chance to win delicious door prizes provided by Bella Cucina Artful Foods and Cabot Cheese. R-Rice Restaurant: A New Twist on Asian and American Cuisine

There is a new restaurant in town that adds a delicious Asian twist to American cuisine. R-Rice specializes in dishes that consist of fresh sushi as well as unique American sandwiches. Sushi Chef Kondo will tempt you with his array of fine sushi such as smoked salmon roll, tuna roll and shrimp tempura roll. The deep-fried ichiban roll made of cream cheese, avocado, and smoked salmon will leave you completely satisfied. Other specialties on the menu are the unique American sandwiches accompanied by special Asian sauces created by Chef Kiko. Chef Kiko’s passion for food is found in these delectable dishes. Favorite Foods from Childhood – Atlanta Chefs

I would like to highlight my absolute favorite section of the fall 2010 issue – “Chef Talk” by Emily Robinson. (Emily is Flavors‘ editorial intern who attends UGA.) Jamie Annarino inspired Emily to write this article. If you haven’t seen it yet, it incorporates childhood pictures of some of Atlanta’s best-loved chefs with quotes from the chefs about their favorites foods from their childhoods. It really is adorable–and interesting to consider how the chefs’ talents and interests may have been sparked from the best foods from their childhoods. Local Atlanta Restaurants and Share Our Strength Band Together to Help Take a Bite Out of Childhood Hunger!

Come join local Atlanta restaurants and Share Our Strength for the Great American Dine Out®.  This event will take place Sunday, September 19 through Saturday, September 25, 2010.  The participating restaurants can be found at  The more you dine out at these delicious restaurants, the more money you will raise for Share Our Strength.
